Chapter 8: Speculation

What is this? Another dream?

Where is this place?
I can't recognise this scenery.
Another messed up reality?

Wait

Is that a statue I  am seeing?

I come closer to see it clearer.

A statue indeed, with the shape of a cat.
It's freaking huge, must be at least as tall as a ten storage building.
And it's...

Staring at me.

BOONG.

What the hell? Was the noise just now coming from the statue?

BOONG! BOONG!

It's too loud, make it stop! MAKE IT STOP!

BOOOOOONG!

Stop! Stop it already. My head is shaking.

Everything around me rumbling with each beats. The ground is shattered.

And I fall in to oblivion.

Bing Bong!

The door bell's ringing.
Damn it, I had a strange nightmare thanks to that sound.

Bing Bong!

"I'm coming". I reluctantly get up and come to the door, wondering who.

"Hurry up, slowpoke!" Oh it's just her, my sister.

"Huh? don't you have to go to work today?" After a deep sleep, I completely forget about the time.

"What? Of course I do, but worktime's over now, and I'm hungry too." Her answer does not include the information I lack at the moment. However I quickly realise that it's quite late already, which mean I've slept for like 2 or 3 hours.

"Is it dinner time already?"
"Yes it is, what have you been doing all the afternoon eh?" She rushes inside to get away from the rain, not even need to hear my saying.

"I went out to buy some books, got caught in the rain, went back home and slept through the day." I tell her all the activities I can remember.

"Going out without an umbrella, in this weather? How really dumb. Is there any hot water? I really need to take a hot shower." She snorts, not so nice for a lady..

"Umm, dunno, I haven't taken the shower yet, go see for yourself." Is that so?

"Geez, you should always have hot water ready this season you know? Your beloved sis will catch a cold if she does not have a hot comfortable bath, and who will eat dinner with you then?" She keeps going on with and educative yet childish manner while walking to her room. Well, at least she must be surprise that her room suddenly got all cleaned up. Who else could have done this she must wonder.

......
......
......

Wait a minute.  Is there anything missing?
Is there anything important I need to remember?
I recall cleaning up her room, but why?
For some reason, I feel like a fraction of my memory is erased from my mind, without me noticing it. And then, I hear his voice, angrily.

"You dumbass, how can you forget about it? Thera is still in the room."

Thera? in the room? It feels like all the haze in my head is blown away by a strong wind.

"Shit, why can't I remember it sooner." I rush to the second floor, prepare myself an explaination when my sister sees a strange girl sleeping in the bed.

"Hey sis, wait!"

But when I arrive, all I see is just her, Thera is nowhere to be found.

"Huh, what's up?" She doesn't seem to notice my panic earlier.

"Umm... I cleaned your room this afternoon, see?" At least I know what to say in this situation

"Oh, I'm wondering why my room's so nice. Well thank you, I'll give you some treat for this." Luckily she doesn't have a clue. Well actually it's not thing there to doubt though.

"Make some tasty dishes then." I sigh in relieve, the go back downstair, not sure how to feel.

Should I feel lucky that my sister didn't see Thera? Or should I worry why she wasn't there? I don't know if her injury has recovered yet.

The more important thing is, why is my memory is so blurry?

"Definitely it's her doing." He says, nonchalantly.

"What? What are you talking about?" I don't quite understand the situation here.

"Isn't that obvious? She erased your memory when you was sleeping, the memory about the meeting today. That's the reason why you can remember all the events happened except for her appearance. Well guess she forgot an important thing is that I was also there. Guess in her hurry, she forgot to deal with me too."  Truly thankful, I have this guy with me.

"She erased my memory? Why did she do that?" This is the issue.

"Clearly she doesn't want anybody know about her existence, that's for sure."

"I know that, the question is why she wants to hide her existence that much, to go that far as erasing my memory. "

"She said she didn't trust you, right?". I still cannot remember much, did she said such thing, or did he just make that up? Well, come to think of it, I cannot expect to gain her trust that soon.

"What did I tell you before? That girl cannot be trusted. Luckily it was just your memory being erased. If there were anything happening to you, which of course to me too, then we would be so screwed, consider the fact the she's capable of doing such magic like that. Who knows what else she can do?" He continues.

"Why did she leave without saying a word?" While he's pondering about the dangerous site of her, I'm in a complete different world.

"Hmmm? What are you talking about?" A flicker of flame in his voice.

"What if her injury is not fully healed yet? why she had to force herself like that? I don't understand." I'm too deep in the thought that can't even see his rage parameter is rising. But he doesn't burst out like always.

"Man, is that your priority right now? You should know that...."

"I should find her." I interrupt him abruptly. Untill now do I notice his burning anger. Crap, here it comes.

".....You...arhgghh, why are you so stupid?" Just that? all my tense is for nothing then.

"Isn't that the question of a lifetime?" Lame joke, but that's all I can bring up, as usual.

"And you will get no support from me. If you are thinking of doing that, then think about do it on your own. Seriously, I'm tired of telling you to play safe when you keep on risking your life."

"Come on, what part of it is a risk? She's just a lost injured girl, what could possibly go wrong?" Unless she's a man-eating monster, which is highly unlikely.

"Let me tell you what can go wrong, you could be killed! Have you ever asked yourself why she was in that bad shape?" What nonsense is this guy talking about?

"Why? and how does that relate to her condition?"

"Use your brain will you? Do you think it randomly happened to her? Or she just ate some out of date food? Even though I'm not 100% sure but her condition was caused by something, or someone." He returns to his coolness when explaining things. Hmm, if I want to cool him down then I will just play dumb and let him do the talking then.

"I see, so you are saying that she is being after?" That sounds reasonable. She knows some magics, even I did not have the chance to see more from it, but she seems to have more than just barrier and mind tricks. If that is the case...

"Yes, power always draws power. I guess she is being chased by some people who are also magic users, like her, or worse." I visualize him sitting in front of me, bitting his fingernail.

"By worse, you mean more dangerous?" I ask.

"What else? Judging on how she collapsed in the middle of the street, it must be a narrow escape." He sounds like an old detective movie.

"Then she needs our help even more." With determination, I suddenly say it out loud, not noticing my sister is coming down.

"Who needs your help?" She heard it, darn.

"Ah...um...well I was just playing with Shaggy. See, looks like she needs her food so badly." I squeeze her tail to make her growl, and get some paw fighting in return.

"You're a weirdo you know? Alright then just wait when I make a new dish I just learned yesterday. It's gonna be good."  That cannot be considered as good news but, well, what do I expect. At least she didn't find out.

----------------
As expected, my sister new dish was, how do I put it, special to some extent. It was some sort of mixture containing eggs, milk and mashed potatoes. I ate them with the happiest face I could put up, or else I will have to cook for both of us for the rest of my life.

Put that aside, now that my sister had left, I'm having the craziest thought in my mind. I decide to bring the topic back.

"I will find her, no matter what the cost." I hope to hear some, at least, objection from him.

But only silence. He means it. I have to do it on my own.

"Damn he is serious isn't he." I pick up the umbrella, just in case it will rain at night.

Stepping out side, I look back at the clock. It's 10:30 pm.

I hope that I could bring at least one person back to this house.

Chapter 7: Fatigue

Alright, it's good to be back.

It's been a craaazy september, now I am officially a NEET. Yup, done with the university and currently freeloading at parents' house. But the good thing is that I have more time to focus on this story and less time worrying about useless stuff.

And screw weekly update, I will update new chapter whenever I can. So it could be like 2 chapters in 3 days or in 3 weeks, depending on how my brain fuction and my typo.

Now, the story continues. Chapter 7 begins.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Phew" I sight in relief.

It took a while to show Thera through a few things around the house. She was definitely not acquainted with the commodities, which seemed really odd. My guess would be that she came from some kinds of countryside, or different country at least. She didn't know how to use the shower, or how to turn on the drier. So it was me who had to teach her how to use all the, girly things, awkward. But lucklily she's a quick learner.

Thera is taking the bath at the moment, and I will make use of the time to prepare lunch, though it's quite late to call it lunch, especially at 2 in the afternoon. Let's just make something quick and easy to digest, since I don't know what kind of food Thera would like to eat, and my cooking skill is quite limited. Keeping that in mind, I make two omelettes, stir some cabbage and boil a portion of porridge rice. If she doesn't like the food, I will at least try to make her drink the soup to keep her status from going worse. Nevertheless, it seems to be a difficult task I can tell.

Thiry minutes pass, and food is already finished. Thera should be done for now, I go upstair guessing she is waiting in the bed, silently of course.

-------------------------
"Why are you doing this?" The question echoed in my head.

Thera was the first to ask, when I was showing her around.

"Eh? I guess you're not familiar with my house so..." I didn't understand her intention.

"Why do you agree to shelter me? Given the fact that I'm a total stranger."

"Oh that. Umm, you asked for our help so it's natural for me to..." I spoke whatever came up in my head.

Hold her tounge for a second, Thera murmured to herself.

"Natural? Is it natural for human to help each other?" The cold in her voice slowly froze the air.

"Ummm.... actually, I don't know, to be honest. But it's a good thing to do though, you know, helping your own kind." Why did I speak of something I didn't believe in?

"What if it was not your own kind seek for your help? Is it still a good thing if it unnatural? What was your true intention?" She kept on pressing the questions, which drove me further from the shore of my reason. I asked myself the same question, why did I do this? I could have done just like he told me, but why? why? This was not what I intended to to become. I wanted to become the one who would shake off any emotion, the one who would stand there, and watch... But I couldn't, because it was her.

"Actually, I don't know either. Back then I just felt like helping you, that's all." Guess that's much better than saying something like: "I saw you in my dream so it's my fate to help you." Much better.

"Let me make this straight" - I continued- "I'm not a nice person, but also not a bad one. So feel free to hold any kind of thought or judgement about me, I don't really care at all. But as long as you are here, please rest well and don't push yourself too hard. I don't know how to explain about a dead girl in my house okay?" I knew I couldn't let myself be too comfortable around her. At least his advice still had its weight.

Maybe surprise because of my change of pace, she cast her eyes into space. Then..

"You're not honest with yourself, I cannot trust you." With strong confirmation, she stated.

Keeping the straight face, I turned around.

"As I said before, keep the assumption to yourself. The bath is ready, you can go wash yourself. Your clothes can be put in that basket over there, I'll dry them later. Here's your new clothes to change. They're from my sister, but judging from your form, I think they'll fit." Putting the clothes down, I walked out of the room.

"Why are you doing this?" the second time this question was raised. Only the one who asked was different.

"Come on, I've told you already haven't I?" I was really tired of being questioned over and over.

"No, I mean why was that sudden change of attitude like that?" He was curious, definitely.

"That? what do you mean? Did I do something weird?"

"Don't play dumb on me. You know what I'm talking about right? At first you was like "here you go Thera", and then you was like "I don't really care about you". What are you, a tsundere or something?"

"What? Sheez, didn't you tell me to be careful around her? I just acknowleged your words after all. Don't tell me you forget already." Yeah, I doubted that.

"My my, you've crossed the line long ago my friend. Just a little caution will not change anything. But at least, I can see you're improving."

"Improving? at what?" I was curious. Could that guy be able to compliment someone?

"At stupidity level, you're less stupid now. You should be glad." He said happily.

"Well I don't know how to react to that." My expectation was too damn high.

---------------------------------

"Thera, lunch is ready." I knock the door.

No response. It's not a good sign.

"Thera" I know again, still no answer. It's really worrisome. She didn't look well from the beginning. If it happen she faints again, well... Guess I have no choice then.

"Excuse me, I'm going in." I open the door, slowly, in case of, you know, unexpected scene.

But all my worries was for notthing. She has already put herself to sleep. The clothes I gave her does fit her very well, and she look peacefully sleeping.

"..." Dazed for a second, I snap myself out immidiately. It's not right to keep stairing at a sleeping girl. Totally not.

"Eh, don't even have any funny idea, got that?" His voice sounds somewhat, I don't know, threatening?

"What do you think I am? I'm not that kind of person you know." A genuine anger when you're misunderstood.

"Well, I just warn you, don't have to go all gung-ho like that." That little shit, he keeps toying with me.

"Oh I get it. I will listen to her guardian then. It's a good thing to have somebody look after her too."

"Hey, I'm not her guardian or something, you hear me? I just don't want you to.." He quickly disclaims, how amusing.

"Right right, I get it, you don't have to get all hyped-up like that. Chill down bro." I block his escape, consider this as my payback you ass.

"You..." He wants to say something really bad, I know.

"Okay okay, I was just foolling around." I should drop it here if I don't want to get some nasty revenge later on.

It was a quick lunch, just two of us. Thera's still sleeping and will not wake up anytime soon. She must be worn out. Outside, it starts to rain again. Just the beginning of autumn and it has already become quite cold and humid. The rain has last for 4 or 5 days, I can't even remember. It seems like the sky has sucked all the water from the ocean and pour them down to the land. And as if it's not enough, the northern winds raging continuously, bringing the breeze to make a typical picture of fall. It's always like that this time of the year. No yellow leaves, no cool winds, just rains and coldness. The weather change so sudden from summer to autumn that it would even make people who are not familiar with this climate sick. It goes like this: one day it's hot like hell, melty temperature in the morning. But just in the afternoon, you've worn your long sleeves already. Harsh as it is, I'm still okay with this weather, cause it makes me fall alseep very easily. Speaking of which, I feel a heavy weight put on my eyelids. After a long stroll under the rain, now a full stomach, I guess this is reasonable.

"Well, it's been hell out of a day."

With that spoken to myself, I lie down to the couch and slowly fall to sleep, forgetting all that happened.

The last thing I remember is the number 15:01 showed on the clock.
